It Started with a Survey
I didn’t start in community. I began in consumer behavior.
At a regional bank, I spent months buried in outdated survey data between the 1980s-2000s, wrestling with fragmented data to predict customer needs. Useless.
So over six-months, I designed my own.
Result: The board invested in digital experiences (validated strategy) and ATMs (surfacing an unmet need).
Lesson: The answers were already there. They simply had to be revealed.
But my trial by fire came at an multi-national trade association, we had sixty days before closure. I decided to speak to every member in our database to know what we were missing (desperation strips things down to essentials): Fortune 500 executives, government officials and diplomats—none of which have patience for fluff.
Conversations revealed what our digital surveys never could.
We redesigned everything: onboarding, programming, deliverables.
Members finally felt Heard.
Result: Retention jumped from 58% to 95%. The organization survived.
Lesson: Voice surfaces what writing hides.
